Provides skill development necessary to safely and effectively respond to, contain, and control incidents involving hazardous substances in a defensive manner.
Qualifies for EMS and CLEET CEUs
Core Competencies: Through classroom lecture, group activities, and hands-on skill sessions students are provided the knowledge and skills necessary to meet NFPA's 2018 edition of Standard 472 and 1072, Chapter 5 Core Competencies, and Chapter 6.2 Mission-Specific Competencies: Personal Protective Equipment.
Product Control: Describe each of the various spill control tactics, perform absorption/adsorption, perform damming, diking, and diversion retention operations. Perform vapor suppression and dispersion and dilution operations. Discuss leak control. Perform remove valve shutoff. Explain fire control. NFPA 472 and 1072, 2018 edition Chapter 6.6.

- This course provides operations level responders with the knowledge and skills to safely:
- 1. Analyze a hazardous materials incident to determine the scope of the problem and potential outcomes
- 2. Plan an initial response to a hazardous materials incident within the capabilities of the personnel and resources available
- 3. Implement the planned response to a hazardos material incident
- 4. Evaluate the status of the actions taken to accomplish the response objectives
- 5. Donning, working in, and doffing PPE

- This course includes pre-course assignments that complete portions of the required training. Much of the material addressed by these assignments is included within the certification exam.

Requirements |
- All students must enroll a week prior, to participate in this class. This allows time to complete the pre-course materials.
- This course includes a pre-course reading assignment and completion of the accompanying quizzes. Students will be mailed the pre-course assignment 8-14 days prior to the first scheduled class session. Students that attempt to enroll past 14 days prior to the first class session must obtain consent from OSU-FST’s program manager.
