The purpose of course PER-348, Response to a Radiological Dispersal Device (RDD) - Overview and Implementation of the First 100 Minutes Guidance, is to provide response-level training to those participants who, in the performance of their normal duties, could encounter a radiological/nuclear incident. The participant will also be provided information on working in a radiological environment in the safest manner possible. It will be accomplished by explaining radiation detection methods, protective actions, and how to decontaminate based on the type of contamination experienced.
Course Objectives: At the end of this course, participants will be able to: Identify the five missions and the ten tactics in responding to a Radiological Dispersal Device (RDD) detonation as described in the First 100 Minutes Guidance (National Urban Security Technology Laboratory [NUSTL], 2017). Differentiate between the radiation types and select the appropriate detection equipment used to identify, distinguish, and measure them through Tactics 1, 2, 7, and 8 in the First 100 Minutes Guidance (NUSTL, 2017). Determine which individuals at a RDD event will need to be decontaminated, determine the correct method, and perform the decontamination steps.
